Title Research: Mystery

I found the opening sequence of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on artofthetitle.com.
  1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?
The only title displayed is the title for the film. There are credits to the production company and the creators of the movie, but that is it.
  2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
Throughout the entire sequence, there is a presence of an black oily substance. It flows past various objects, including the title card. It also takes various shapes, mostly human-like forms. Later in the scene, these human-shaped creatures are set on fire. After this, shots of them become more violent in nature as they break apart. There is also an appearance of a flaming bird, which could represent a phoenix.
  3. What connotations do these images carry?
There is a dark and ominous tone to the oil flowing on screen. As it slithers by, it can be viewed as a malicious entity. The surreal nature of the human forms moving around in various poses gives a general feeling of uneasiness. The fire later on is the first sense of real violence expressed and is further picked up on when the figures fall apart. How they are tortured in multiple ways and how they crumble further sets up how dark the movie could get.
  4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
This sequence sets up for a serious and dark story full of violent acts. The audience can expect crimes to be committed hinting at a horror or mystery genre.
  5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The film's gritty and dark nature would appeal to anyone looking for a good thriller/mystery film. This is due to the fact that the mysteries that tend to be used involve some sort of murder or kidnapping or something along those lines. The sound choice could also hint at action being a big part of the movie, which backs up fans who already liked the gritty nature of the genre.
  6. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.
Though the title sequence is computer animated, it still uses very close up camera shots to pinpoint the emotion on the humanoids' faces. Several cuts to the action with the fire or the crumbling can shock the audience when the appear without warning.
