Research blog: Music Video Conventions

The song we are going to use for our music video is "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. In preparation for the music video filming, we have to plan out the process. Before planning, however, it is extremely helpful to do research on the type of music video we will be filming. Before researching music videos, we have to narrow down the type of video because their are many different types of music videos that would provide irrelevant information. Some genres of music videos include, Indie, Pop, R$B, and hip hop. The genre of the music video we are using is the grunge genre.
There are many common tropes among music videos involving the grunge genre. After researching music videos from Green Day, I have seen similar themes between them. Most of the video length is usually taken up by the band performing into the camera with their instruments. In between scenes it cuts to the band performing a full on concert, either in an enclosed room or outside with a makeshift setup. It would be difficult to use this as reference, as we are not Green Day, so we will have to make use of other references. For example, in between scenes of the band performing, the main character of the music video stares blankly at the T.V, mouthing the lyrics to the camera. The point of these scenes are that they tie in with the lyrics well, "I sit around and watch the tube but, nothing's on". In Boulevard of Broken Dreams, the video entirely consists of the group walking around with scenes of them performing, with a sad tone similar to the lyrics "I walk a lonely road".
Another grunge music video is Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The video shares certain aspects with Green Day's music video such as the live band performances in the video. In both videos, the band is performing with their instruments as if they would in an actual concert. Unfortunately, there is not a way to incorporate this into out video because we do not have any instruments, toy instruments, or music-making experience. Instead, we are going to make a music video that is mostly sad because the song sounds very sad. The research we completed has helped us greatly understand the grunge genre. We will undoubtedly take great inspiration from grunge music videos and the Green Day video for out video.
