Genre Research: Thriller


 

  1. Another genre we hope to incorporate into our film is the thriller genre.
    Thrillers have darkness in scenes that are emotional. Most scenes don't have a lot of brightness. They use wide shots to show the area, if there are fight scenes they use a multitude of shots like birds-eye view, medium shots, and two-person shots depending on what's happening. They use track shots during fights and zoom-ins to show the importance of certain objects. Costumes: tattered clothing, or dull-looking clothes they don't usually use anything too special. Actors: they use people who can really create emotion in people. Makeup: they use fake tears or blood to show physical pain or emotion. Props: They use breakable props in order to not hurt anyone. Setting: Usually dark and changes ending up being light near the end.
  2. Tend to have a lot of emotional plot points and try their hardest to evoke emotion by using things like children or characters you can relate to. Use songs that create emotion in people with things like violins or pianos. In fight scenes use upbeat fight music. And they sometimes use eerie sounds to create a sense of uneasiness. Reservoir Dogs, Chinatown, Silence of the Lambs. I love how thriller makes me sit on the edge of my seat. The suspense you get from thrillers is unparalleled and even beats out horror in my opinion. One gripe I have is the ratio of time to reward. I think time is extremely important in thrillers. Since I have limited time it will be much harder to create an impact.

 Conventions within the film: This film has a constant flow of dramatic tension. There are several times where there is a build up of ambient sound as the main character’s fear level rises. After this build up, however, it returns to silence.  The use of car sounds creates a sense of dread for the audience. They directly reflected the amount of tension present in the scene. The constant click of the reverse blinker represents a rise in the tense atmosphere from the silence that was broken. There are various shots from the backup camera of the car. This is because there are some things that only the camera picks up. It gives off the feeling that the camera is more alive than just a camera, with it having its own viewpoint. When all of the car sound effects occur at once, the suspense is at its maximum. There is a car alarm and a frequent change of camera angles with constant cuts. Genre Research: The Silence of the Lambs

  What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The genre has the starting crime included, a staple of mystery movies. There is a serial killer who needs to be caught before they kill more people. There is also a main character from an outside source tasked of solving the mystery. The main character is just an F.B.I. trainee and has no connections to the case, but they are asked to interrogate someone to find out more about this case. There are further conflicts as the mystery progresses as well, which can either take an action or thriller route depending on the type of film. This film opts to go the thriller route, with more murders happening as the story continues on. And of course there is a payoff in the conclusion when the murderer is discovered.  What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

  The first website we used to research film titles was very versatile. It helped us learn how the title should have the same mood as the movie's opening. We learned that the font, font size, and background could all be uniquely used to create a mood for the audience. The first website helped us visualize our opening as more than a word or two. But, researching just the first website was not enough for us to be satisfied. We wanted to find more information in order to make our title the best it can be. Luckily, our teacher recommended another website with a lot of information on film titles. The website is called watchthetitles.com. Similar to the first website we used, watchthetitles.com had titles of a lot well-known movies we could use as references. The biggest difference of watchthetitles.com was that it featured many more film title creators than the first website.
